The future means different things in different places. In one world, it can mean total media saturation. In another it can be a television satellite mounted on top of a clay dwelling. Unlimited information challenges increasingly repressive value systems. Contemporary ideals of liberal youth are furtively consumed in societies ruled by ancient texts. Augmented reality is used to find the nearest Gap for some while cellphones appear in other areas where running water is a challenge. Fatima Al Qadiri‘s music encompasses these differences and conflicts in a whole. Her sound borrows from and challenges the cultures she was raised in and supplements those with the world of possibilities opened up to her her through the cultural communications of the global village. Her sound is full of throwback futurism, reflecting the varying levels of technology available across the world. It’s also haunting and weary, but perseverant and forward thinking.

Fatima, also known as Ayshay, was raised in Kuwait but now lives in Brooklyn. She has an EP scheduled to drop on the NYC-based Tri Angle records, and an Nguzunguzu remix of the title track was just released. Another local label, Uno, will also put out an EP of hers soon, which “D-Medley” will be a part of. The below mix is built on samples of sacred Shi’ite and Sunni acapellas found on the internet and was released last year by Dis magazine. Fatima also writes a blog for them called Global .Wav, which we’ve recently added to our blogroll. If you’re feelin her sounds, Ayshay will be DJing alongside a number of her new Tri Angle fam at the PS1 Warmup this Saturday. Check our newly revived calendar for details. (Art by Then One.)

This mix by Atropolis takes us on a tour of the sounds that he’s been using to get crowds moving lately, and it’s a general mash of global club influences, valuing energy over affiliation. The array of instruments, rhythms, and precedents are only as important as their affect on the body. He keeps the mood upbeat while staying away from anything too peppy for the most part, bringing high production values to sounds that are originally pretty hype anyway. “I went with a 125 bpm dance and sweat kind of feel,” he says. Well put. If you’re in New York, he’ll be spinning this Friday in Bushwick at iBomba Lite. And if you weren’t already aware, he just dropped a self-titled album on Dutty Artz, which you should probably cop. It’s his birthday this week, so show some love! The tracklist is after the jump. Murlo is the newest head to push soca into new realms, and this carnivalesque drum machine jump off proves it once again. Don’t get it twisted though – it’s much more than the simple combination of existing styles. It slides back and forth between soca and a half time boom bap, both coming from a recognizable UK mindset with its bass and rhythmic patterns. Add to that the Beyonce vocals and it breaths a style of beachside freshness. The track also opens up lots of mixing opportunities, allowing an easy transition into some slow dancehall or hip hop and its drum palette also presents the chance to explore the similarities of juke and soca, since they both use the same tempos.

In the spirit of furthering the conversation, we also included this mid-aughties soca remix of “Pay My Bills” by the Virgin Island’s DJ Commodore. Annnd, if you still haven’t gotten enough Beyonce, Bristol’s Plaebac posted a free download of his smooth bass version of “Say My Name” over at Bassache.net. On a final note, Murlo just flipped this expertly done mixtape, which blends soca, dancehall, grime, hip hop, funky and more. Definitely recommended. (Photo by Matthew Thomas.)

Tomorrow night, Bushwick will go global at the always interesting 319 Scholes loft space, thanks to REFUGEnyc and RoyalPink. Poirier will be headlining alongside Bassanovva, Liondub, and Small Change. Also on the list is DJ Rekha, who blessed us with this mixtape to support the party. It’s nice to see the Desi sound featured at a global club party, because it’s a bit underrepresented. “It is its own scene, but the music deserves a wider dance music audience,” she says. “In general, DJs and audiences would be better served by some genre blurring.” Tomorrow Rekha will rinse a similar blend of traditional bhangra sounds with contemporary club music as the mix below – all depending on the crowd, of course. And if you for some reason miss this party, you can always catch her alongside Eddie Stats at the weekly Basement Bhangra parties at SOB’s, as Wyclef reminds us at the end of the mix. Technology has created a new cultural supercontinent and mixtapes like this are the embodiment of its citizens. Pacheko is one of those artists who’s always taking steps in new directions, and this excursion into tropical bass is a welcome one. This mix travels from moombahton to kwaito to UK funky to mixtures of all of that and more. Like most in his Abstractor camp, the dubstep is present but diverse, and although he revs up the chainsaw occasionally, he’s sure to include the deeper sounds. We made our debut appearance on the airwaves early this blistery morning. Lamin invited Waer Rock to come through and rinse out some beats soaked by the stormy weather. When Turrbotax first started, New York most definitely needed a party that focused on the percussive, housier side of bass music. And with their one-year-anniversary party coming up this Friday, it continues to grow increasingly relevant. Like always, they hit us off with the freebies this month – you can get in free if you show up before 11PM. And as is standard, free Asahi will be handed out. Todd Edwards, Jersey’s garage OG, will be headlining the night, backed by New York’s next garage star, Falty DL.
