If you haven’t seen the sunrise in 200 years, and thus are unable to attend the PS1 Warmup party on Saturday afternoon, you’ve got another chance to catch Nguzunguzu during their most recent visit to the East Coast. The perpetually interesting Ghe20 G0th1k party gets the nguzus to perform for a second time this summer at their eclectic warehouse party in East Williamsburg. When: Thursday, 10PM – 1AM
Cost: FREE
Facebook event page

Unless you’re sitting on top of the bar, there isn’t much room at Bembe for anything but dancing, so be prepared to get nice and sweaty. Cumba Mela recently shed their Monday nights here and moved on to Thursdays so your cranky ass does’t have anything to complain about anymore. DJ Beto, who seems to be part of the crew these days, will also spin. (Art by Michael Shapcott.)

When: Saturday, August 27th, 11PM – 4AM
Cost: $5
Facebook event page

Dubbel Dutch seems like he should perform here more often because he has a lot of support in the area. Instead, this weekend is a pretty rare chance to catch his mutant tropical dance styles in a live setting, thanks to BPM 152. The residents here are Messkid, Tom Cruz, Wyse, and Knifeshow from Full Service and The Math + Science Show on WNYU. (Art by Ruben Ireland.)

Braille/Tanlines/Blood Diamonds [Indie Tropical / Next House]

Where: Glasslands, 289 Kent Avenue, Williamsburg [MAP]
When: Friday, August 26th, 10PM – 2AM
Cost: $10
Facebook event page

Much like B-sides, supporting acts can often be more exciting than the main attraction. Such is the case with tonight’s event. Braille is the first order of business here. As one half of Sepalcure, Praveen has taken those warm deep sounds into housier territories with this new single act. Glasslands’ dreamcloud sculpture (above) is a fitting visual. Check “Breakup” below. Then there’s the Tanlines DJ set, which may or may not be different from their new sound which will be ‘debuted’ at PS1 the next morning. Blood Diamonds will headline. Turrbotax has become a leading force in forward thinking dance music in NYC in the two years since it started, consistently flying over some of the biggest UK names in bass music and bringing top DJs from other club scenes throughout the States. And it’s still an inexpensive night out, too. On Friday, they’ll be celebrating their introduction into the terrible twos with Blawan, Robert Hood, and Pursuit Grooves along with residents Contakt, Mayster, Rem Koolhaus, C-Sick, and Space Jam. Put some smell good on with your dancing shoes, leave your camera at home, and come through! (Also, Contakt and Mayster just dropped a single on Dutty Artz, which the below remix is from.)

Obsolete Regrets

Static dripping synths cling ominously to the surface of a swamp paced beat. Symphonic organs wail in concert with vocals lost in the smoke of burning obsolete electronics. Arpeggiated ember bits flutter in the thick air while outdated creatures howl and gloopy drums trudge on. Andy Petr sought to rid himself of this Demon through the free APD005 EP over on Mixpak, where you can now find more of our steyels. (Painting by Nick Gentry via Core 77.)

Global Warning

Challenged organs resembling failed warning sirens and distant foot stomps pounding a beat into the dense earth shake and whirl the dust that has yet to settle. Charred remains crunch underfoot, and a pained jazzy melody plays from unattended speakers. This is just Monday, but things do get brighter as The Murray Episodes 2 continues through the rest of the free week. Check the Datalog to see what led us to this point. (Image by Long Cao Hoang.)

Nova’s Passion

Steady story-high drums, triumphant synths, and Native American chants (presumably meant to reference battle cries) set the stage for this new video and track by Red Hook’s Kris Kasanova. The epically rising beat; Kasanova’s frustrated, angry flow; and the video’s plot are what generate most of the passion in “War Paint”. The content of Nova’s lyrics lack much substance. But a few instances of real expression slip through, like when he compares his success to the low-expectations leveled at him, when he raps “Kris means Christ-like, can’t walk in his shoes” or “My baby mama sufferin’ from postpartum,” and when he briefly references street problems. Watch for the part where he says, “When they see me they start applauding heavy” and note the swinging subtle claps that drop into the beat.

Los Rakas/Large Up [Hip Hop/Tropical]

When: Friday, August 19th, 10PM – 4AM
Where: Tammany Hall, 152 Orchard St., LES [MAP]
Cost: ?
Facebook event page

‘Panabay’ rappers Los Rakas are about to drop their new EP, and their New York release party gets some heavy support from local favorites as usual. Sponsored by Large Up, the event features dancehall selectahs Max Glazer, DJ Gravy, Micro Don and Eddie STATS. It’s also got Chief Boima, who produced much of the EP, and Uproot Andy. Both can be expected to bring some global fire to the place. The Panamanian/Oakland duo’s EP, Chancletas y Camisetas Bordadas (Flip-flops & Wifebeaters), drops on Tuesday. Although we’re not a fan of seeing hairy knuckled toes in sandals on the subway, this event is sure to be crackin.
