Industrial Streams

Kneeling alongside a polluted stream, thoughts turn to memories of a time with an Abundance of Love. Persistent syncopated percussion trickles along the stream covered with a deep slick of dark bass. Announcements urging positivity emerge garbled from damaged public speakers while arpeggiated keys float in the air with an agenda. Only for a brief interlude, a heavy truck wobbles by filled with a load of hazardous bass destined for wastelands and thoughts again drift back to a better time colored in cold hues by hindsight. But remembrance turns to dwelling in circles after three minutes and the stories are repeated with no more than mood to carry them along for the rest of the experience. Photo by yellowstoneguy.

Circoloco (Minimal) @ Nameless for Now

When: Fri., May 29, 11:00PM
Where: Williamsburg, 213 N. 8th St. (MAP)
Cost: $10 before midnight, $20 after

This venue is always fun. The nameless space that once was Supreme Trading has been reincarnated into Williamsburg’s newest, most promising club (disclaimer - Culture System works with it’s owners). Past parties were thrown here with nothing but a ridiculous soundsystem, space heaters on the dance floor, sheet rock walls, and a leaky roof. But we hear the floors have been put in and the club is well on it’s way to being officially open and christened with a name. Sheik n’ Beik are likely to kill it with another Circoloco party featruing Lee Curtis, Guti Live and Julio + Fong in the main room. RomainviLLe, Varick, and Pito, Karraskilla, and Giovanni from Biatch Corp. take over the side room.

El Toy Killah

Raverton: great name, tuff style. It’s like a Reggaeton rhythm crunched into a with an emphasis on the 4 x 4 meter. The man responsible for the gems we’re about to lace you with is Toy Selectah. They’re taken from his Mex More mixtape, which you can grab for free over at the Mad Decent blog.

These songs are so much more than, “Look at me, I can mash disparate styles together!” They come together with an identity all their own. And Toy keeps it movin’, too. The songs switch up every few bars, new melodies and polyrhythms are constantly introduced, and a broad array of sounds are incorporated throughout.

Make sure to catch dude when he comes to New York on June 4.

Machinedrum (Beats and Bass) @ Coco 66

When: Sat., May 16, 09:00PM
Where: Coco 66, 66 Greenpoint Ave., Greenpoint (MAP)
Cost: $8

The name of this party is “The Future is Beautiful.” Well, we’re probably not that optimistic over here, but we can dig the tunes. Featuring field recording heavy minimal by Thomas Hilderbrand, indietronics by Body Language, beats by Machinedrum, tech house by Konque and Rob Van Valen, and sparse brooding techno by Isomer Transition.
