Global MP3 Scavangers

Kwau Kese, “Kwakwa”

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

This right here is some grimy hiplife (it starts about one minute in). It comes from a compilation called Sounds of Our Time, which was produced by Hammer – who is apparently the Timbaland of Ghana. We picked this up from the blog Awesome Tapes from Africa, which we welcome to Culture System‘s NY Music Blogroll. If you end up at Tapes, make sure to peep Dynamike’s joint also. We came accross them through an article in Utne Magazine about global crate digging bloggers, which also features the local Voodoo Funk and another blog called Radiodiffusion Internasionaal that features a list of MP3s organized by countries – from Burma to Vietnam to Iran.
